CDC: 96.6 percent of Americans are straight

By George Mathis

What percent of Americans are straight?

I would have guessed somewhere in the 90 percent range, but, as usual, I would have been wrong.

According to a report published in July by the Centers for Disease Control, 96.6% of adults identified themselves as straight in the 2013 National Health Interview Survey, which, for the first time in its 57-year history included questions about sexual orientation.

The report says 1.6 percent of 34,557 adults surveyed identified as gay or lesbian. Another 0.7 percent identified as bisexual.

Another 1.1 percent either did not answer the question (0.6 percent) or selected “something else” from the list of answers (0.2 percent) or “I don’t know” (0.4 percent).

The results largely mirror those of other studies, though the percentage of those identifying as bisexual was a bit lower (0.7 percent) than a 2008 survey (1.1 percent).

Why is the CDC interested in sexual behavior?

According to the report, “sexual minorities tend to fare worse” in various health conditions, including asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease. One of the goals of the federal government’s Healthy People 2020 initiative is to improve the health, safety, and well-being of LGB persons.

According to the report, the survey questions were asked face-to-face by “trained interviewers with the U.S. Census Bureau.”

Here are a few more details gleaned from the survey:

  • The percentage of males and females identifying as gay or lesbian or straight was consistent.
  • A higher percentage of women (0.9 percent) than men (0.4 percent) identified as bisexual.
  • Americans over 65 were less likely to identify as homosexual (0.7 percent), than younger age groups (1.9 and 1.8 percent for ages 18-44 and 45-64).
  • Younger Americans were more likely to identify as bisexual. Of those in the 18-44 age group, 1.1 percent said they were bisexual. Only 0.4 percent of those in the 45–64 age group identified as bisexual, 0.2 percent among those 65 or older.
  • Those who identified as gay or lesbian (27.2 percent) or bisexual (29.5 percent) said they smoked more often than those who said they were straight (19.6 percent).
  • Those who identified as gay or lesbian (35.1 percent) or bisexual (41.5 percent) said they consumed more alcohol (more than 5 drinks in a day at least once in the last year) than those who said they were straight (26 percent).
  • No significant difference in the amount of aerobic activity was discovered.
  • A greater percentage of women who identified as straight (63.3 percent) were in excellent or very good health compared with 54 percent of women who identified as lesbian.
  • A higher percentage of men aged 20–64 who identified as straight (30.7 percent) were obese than men who identified as gay (23.2 percent).
  • Among women aged 20–64 a higher percentage who identified as bisexual (40.4 percent) were obese than women who identified as straight (28.8 percent).

"As others have asked, why does the media insist on depicting the gay lifestyle?"

And may I ask what exactly is the "gay lifestyle"?

What is the "straight lifestyle"? Does it mean you wear dorky shorts, polo shirts from the '80s and having a beer gut? Are all straight people living that "lifestyle"?

And before you talk about it "being a choice" let me ask you one thing. Tell me when, exactly, you chose to be straight?

As others have asked, why does the media insist on depicting the gay lifestyle? Do gays see more TV or movies and printed matter than the 96.6%? And why does the media and printed matter producers feel obligated to feature interracial marriages? Do they represent more than 3.4% of the population? It appears the writers and producers have an agenda not entirely based on producing more revenue.

I generally identify my race as "Pacific Islander" when obnoxious government forms demand to know this unnecessary information. So I take the value of this government sponsored survey with a grain of salt.  I would have answered "other" myself, and let the statisticians try to figure it out.

Researchers know to distinguish between behavior and identification/labels. Had they asked have you ever had same sex that would be different number.  Some MSMs and vice-versa can and do identify as straight.

4% of the population, yet gays on every show and just about dominate holloywood.  Funny stuff.  Time for a changing of the guard.  By what ever means is required.

@ Susan89 - You do realize that 4.4% of the US population is 14,960,000 people don't you?  That's a lot of people and I wouldn't be one bit surprised if that's accurate.

Not taking sides, just observing that as one ages one begins to understand that some people are wired a litle differently. Doesn't make em bad or evil, just different. All God's chilluns.

As to prior posters' comments that the gay lifestyle seems to get an inordinate amout nof attention, thank the lamestream media for that.

Susan89

How do they know that?  That is wrong.  There are a lot more than 4.4% of gay people in this country.

So, 3% of the population seems to now be ruling public policy for the other 97%.

Now compare those meager percentages—to the numbers claiming benefits as "spouses" of active or retired federal workers.

The real headline here should be "IDENTIFY as straight.  I'm gay and it took me a long time to admit/face it.  Before I did face it, I had sex with other similarly closeted men who would then, and still to this day, identify as straight.  I could hold a parade full of married men from Cobb County alone with whom I had casual sex.  They are still married.  I am not proud of that behavior and I have matured past it.  Until there is a lab test for sexual orientation, the number of gay people will be WAY undercounted.

There are quite a few gays who identify as straight but find themselves very frightened by it. For example, you can pretty well assume that anyone who talks about gays "jamming their lifestyle down our throats" has subconsciously chosen words that show their true orientation. Most straight people don't really care if someone is gay or not.

THEBITTERTRUTH
THEBITTERTRUTH

This really is not good news for the gays. They want to try to jam their lifestyle down our throats every chance they get to make it seem like "everyone" is doing it. Well now we know the real truth. And here is another real truth - us straight people and sick of seeing gays in every TV show and movie produced. Why is it that rarely you see a Latino or Asian characters when clearly they represent a MUCH larger percentage of the population? What is about gay people that makes them so insecure that they have to try and force their lifestyle into everything we watch? I generally turn it off once the gay crap starts rolling.

Another truth - marriage by definition is strictly between a man and a woman. Just about everyone I know agrees with that statement. Just because 3% of the population wants the definition changed doesn't make it so.

Bearhand

The various studies that I had read over the years had always put the percentage between 3% to 5% of the population. This just reaffirms the William Institute Study of 2011. Personal anecdote, out of my 32 first cousins, one has come out as gay, which would be .... 3% of the total viewed population.

The most telling stats on here: straight men more likely to be obese, yet lesbian women more likely to obese.

RBryantS

Shouldn't that read "96.6 percent of Americans say they are straight"?

I can name half a dozen high profile politicians off the top of my head that would have claimed they were straight, until they got caught actually BEING gay.

Dreck.  I would have thought the CDC would have been better than this.

Hey, MikeInATL is NOlongerRepublican one of those in your parade full of married down low men from COBB that you had sex with? Y'all should hook up again and stop trolling the AJC for sex partners. Just share your diseases between yourselves. LOL SMH.

@MikeInATL PS:  the CDC, et al in the scientific community have been ignoring the lab test for sexual orientation for decades because they know the gay gene doesn't exist.  If this recent international hysteria over Ebola deaths (isolated) vs AIDS deaths (epidemic) doesn't slap you into reality then nothing will.  The CDC has at least tried to warn you for the millionth time that the gay lifestyle and ad infinitum sex partners is killing you.  SMH.

Do you want a major award for admitting that you had sex with 3.4% of Americans?

@THEBITTERTRUTH  "What is about gay people that makes them so insecure..."?  It is the fact that gay people still face legal and government sanctioned discrimination.

@sold1000 maybe.  Maybe that number is a good bit higher. Fact remains, this was (as stated above) self-reported and its real-world accuracy is questionable.

@RBryantS  I am always a bit wary of self-reported data on issues that for many can have a social stigma. In fairness to the CDC though, it was the AJC's headline, not the CDC's.

@BrowningGlory Only if you want an award for a lack of reading comprehension skills. I had sex with the ones who are not counted in the 3.4% so I know for a fact that the 3.4% is low.  How much higher should it be?  No idea...

@MikeInATL  You get the hypocrite award for bragging (see above) about your numerous sexual escapades.   All you, and others, have proven is that gay sex is a lifestyle choice that YOU either want to gloat to everyone about (see above) or are ashamed of the abnormal sexual addiction.  How much higher should your conquests total up to?  No idea ... and the rest of US 96.6 % don't care to hear your bedtime "stories"

LOL, your gay bowel syndrome includes diarrhea of the mouth as well. Nice try though with the usage of homophobic rhetorical weapons. Taking your anger out on me and shooting the messenger because of the gay lifestyle is proving to have increasing grave effects in your health. Too bad the CDC did not disclose findings on what the diseases are doing to your brain and mental state. Talk to the CDC, maybe they'll carve some time out for you after Ebola. Even my people in Africa are more important that you. SMH
