Locks exist on doors for many reasons.

For a 31-year-old Seattle man, it was to keep a 240-pound woman from entering his apartment and forcing herself upon him.

Channel 11 in Seattle brings us the story of Chantae Gilman, who, in 2013, while pregnant with her third child, went into the home of a sleeping man she didn’t know and initiated sex.

According to the police report, the victim said he “slept very hard due to a long work day” and, at about 2 a.m., woke up to find the 26-year-old woman on top of him. She had pinned his hands down over his head.

When the victim asked Gilman to get off, she continued to have sex and told him to be quiet, the police report says.

The man eventually got out from under his attacker and told her to leave. She asked for a cigarette. The man pushed her out of his apartment, threw a cigarette at her and finally locked the door.

He went to a local hospital for a sexual assault examination. DNA evidence obtained during the examination proved Gilman, who told police she had never been to her victim’s apartment, was at the scene of the crime.

Gilman later took a plea deal that downgraded rape charges to attempted rape and assault.

This case brings up a few questions, but I wonder if a man who entered a sleeping woman’s apartment and had sex with her, and left behind DNA evidence, would get a 9-month plea deal?

Gilman is no angel. She is called a “known drug dealer” with “a criminal history that dates back 15 years, including charges of attempted robbery, attempted forgery, theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.”

She has had two more children since her 2013 arrest.

Let us hope all the fathers were willing.
